1) Call your state representative, the HDR study people, KDOT, and the Secretary of Transportation tell them how you feel about this, and what your suggested remedies are (for example: use existing roads, not new ones taking more land.) (click here for the list of phone numbers),
2) Keep tabs on the public meetings announcements for the Governor's Transportation Task Force and please try to attend and testify if you are so inclined. (click here for latest schedule of meetings)
3) Please call the county commissioners and let them know how you feel on this issue. Remember that they are your representatives. You have every right to ask what their views on this are. Get a commitment from them to consider and support your position.
4) Now is the time to write letters and make phone calls to those people and organizations that will make decisions on this road. Please do whatever you can to let KDOT, HDR, KTA, the Secretary of Transportation, the Governor, etc. know what you want. If you have questions or comments, please feel free to call me (Ron Renz) or any of the other members of the Jefferson Task Force Steering Committee.
5) Collect signatures on petition. (If you need a copy of the petition, please contact the steering committee petitions team.)
6) Pass the word along to your neighbors, friends, and family. Many are unaware of the possible highway plans and how they could negatively affect the people, landscape, and economy of Jefferson County.
7) Send financial contributions to: Jefferson Task Force, c/o Ron Smith, Treasurer, 1604 Union Rd., Lawrence, KS 66044. (Funds will be used to offset printing and mailing costs incurred by Task Force. Contributions are not tax deductible.)
